The Hunt, short for scavenger hunt, is a format we are developing to engage individuals and groups cross-interests, cross-culture and cross-language, engaging them in activity that has a common objective. Although Hunts are a format of entertainment we feel it has a great potential to create a context in which process is a key segment culminating in an end result of some sort.

Intention and Formats
We are launching a Hunt as a possible means to engage participants in a fun and exciting event. This is proving to be a very successful format in which to activate individuals and groups in something meaningful. Traditionally scavenger hunts are designed to look for items listed beforehand. We are still debating whether this limitation is relevant in our case or whether should we think broader and devise lists that encompass several formats: scavenger hunt, treasure hunt, etc.
Initially we were intrigued by potential material hunters would gather with which we were (and still are) hoping to create a structure of some sort wherever Hunts happen. We have explored a "digital camera" possibility which proved very successful. Further formats are still in discussion. More on them soon.
Hunt Items Lists
After the 1st Tester Hunt in London we realised that we are dealing with two parameters / mechanisms that are central to the Hunt: TIME constraint and "curated" LIST. For every Hunt, whether tester or "real", we are creating a carefully chosen list of items which is announced on the day of the Hunt. Participants are being asked to collect items on the list over the course of a time period and meet the "jury" at the rendez-vous to offer hunted items for judging. The list of items range from easy to more difficult items. Each item on the list will be worth appropriate number of points against which the winner will be announced at the end of the Hunt.
Promotion and Incentives
Hunts involve individuals and groups in participating in Hunts whenever and wherever they may happen. This involves a cleaver promotion of Hunts. In conjunction of promotion we are aware that in order to gather a crowd of interested people we have to come up with a scheme of attractive incentives. It would increasingly harder to gather a group of people without offering something in return. According to site-specificity this is subject to discussion. Although there were some silly ideas for incentives put forward (but highly appealing) into consideration, we are not disclosing them at present.
We need to think who is being approached and who is approaching who? How many individuals/groups are we wanting to engage in individual Hunts?
Outcomes of Hunts in Action
Critical Practice is writing a proposal for a weekend in September/October 2011 of interactivity of cultural workers and Madrid's residents. For El Ranchito at the Matadero in Madrid, and in collaboration with Intermediae, we propose an Open Season – The Hunt.
